This deeply symbolic painting completed by Winslow Homer shortly after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in early 1865 embodies the tension between grief and hope after the American Civil War. A discarded Union Army jacket and canteen in the lower right corner identify the farmer as a veteran, and the titular "new field" contrasts with his old one; the battlefield. The bountiful harvest signifies renewal and recovery, while the scythe reminds us of the grim realities he recently came from. This return to productive, peaceful pursuits echoes the biblical passage from Isaiah 2:4, "And they shall beat their swords into plowshares." It also demonstrates his commitment toward reconstruction; not only for the country, but also for his mind, body and soul.
