In early 1859, painter Albert Bierstadt accompanied a government survey expedition headed by Frederick W. Lander, to explore and document the vast Nebraska Territory. This is where he saw and documented in his painting “View of Chimney Rock, Oglala Sioux Village in the Foreground.” This 1860 painting captures the awe of this iconic landmark located in what is now Western Nebraska. Rising more than 300 feet above the surrounding landscape, the grand spire has been seen and recorded by generations of indigenous peoples, the explorers and mountain men heading west, the hundreds of thousands of settlers on the Oregon, Mormon, and California Trails that mentioned it in their diaries more than any other geographical feature that they encountered, and finally, present day travelers that continue to visit this awe-inspiring landmark.
